Leptin, Weight Insulin and how you Store Fat

What stops you eating is as much your tightening belt as leptin release at a hormonal level. Without the leptin you would release the belt and continue eating.

Leptin is a protein composed of 167 amino acids produced primarily by adipose tissue to co-ordinate metabolism of food intake and satiety. Leptin in particular signals to the brain to store or burn fat. It is the leptin released from the fat cells that tells the brain to halt the eating when you are full and increases your basal metabolic rate.

Surprisingly it is very high in fat people, squashing earlier excitement about using this protein as a weight reduction tool. It seems therefore that fat induces resistance to leptin in the same way that one develops insulin resistance as a precursor to non insulin dependent diabetic and the buffalo body remake. The similarity doesn’t stop here.

High GI food induces high leptin, therefore stopping the binge by inducing satiety almost immediately, and don’t forget it lasts over a longer period than the day of the ice cream indulgence. (About five days)
Low GI food and starvation induces low leptin but takes long to get it low enough to start you running behind the ice cream truck. You therefore will have low GI food in the system with residual high leptin levels in the blood resulting in fat breakdown and no craving.
Insulin at this very moment will be low with low glucose to induce fat loss as well.(refer to our previous blogs) It is this cycle that we exploit when we insist that you have to cheat once a week.

The similarity between IL6 and leptin is striking. This explains evolutionary role that it could have played in times of scarcity for example its role in fertility and stress.
