Nobody likes losers irrespective of whether you are All Black, Australian or Springboks. Nobody irrespective of how thick your skin might be likes to back a losing horse.
Optimism we wrote only a few days ago might be an evolutionary advantage to astrolopecus africana, but is losing lots of modern man opportunities to win by hoping rather than ensuring that things run as expected. Optimism will kill you with stress if the backed horse loses nine of the ten games played.
This morning our previous minister of finance was reminded that he once backed the All Blacks against Springboks when masses of people descended on the tarmac to receive the All Blacks.
Springboks got a mediocre reception only a few days earlier in contrast.
Then you could probably justify it in many ways including the effect apartheid had on our psyche.
Now the reason is purely medical and self preservatory.
It probably is time, if you don’t want to end up at our clinic on anti depressants, to jump the barrier line and favor a winning horse.
Sour grapes like optimism have its flaws but in this case are medically as appropriate as one can get.
A losing club will temporarily or even permanently lose its support base for the subject to save himself or herself from the ravaging effect of the sustained increase in cortisol levels.
This would eventually lead to lowered immunity, coronary artery disease, strokes and repeated infections just to name a few.
I believe in stress to drive results but the cortisol has to come down within reasonable time as you achieve your goals.
The Springboks were given ample time to bring back the cortisol of their mass of followers to manageable levels.
The support the All Blacks are getting is reactionary. A dead supporter is of no use to the club followed, save your skin and cross the line. If your club doesn’t care about your health, don’t leave that responsibility to them.
You can say the same about anything else in life, your sunshine at home or the one who left you for somebody else richer, your political party that forgot its roots, the national soccer clubs of yesterday like Arsenal, Moroka Swallows that followed the Springbok route. We as humans can tolerate torture for a limited time period before we break down.
Don’t hit a brick wall twice without learning.
Support Trevor Manuel and the All Blacks.
Take care of your heart, both figuratively and literally.
If biochemistry and physiology of beauty and health are the elements of every mix, then results are assured
