The department of sports medicine has reduced the random appearance of ultra performers like Usain Bolt to being as rare as is common to have a Michael Johnson steroid enhanced episode. Not much of a choice for sport lovers but critical if you are a sport house dependent on the performance of your athletes at professional level. You are as good as your doctor’s capability to keep your competitive advantage hidden from your policing body.
Unfortunately waiting for nature to produce the perfect gene is not as easy in humans either. We frustrate the evolutionary computer that generated the super species like cheetahs we have dotting the landscape out of possible outcomes, therefore praying for history repeats won’t help much.
For us as humans evolution seems to be reversing, except where we mate two small peoples to make a jockey or tennis stars (I never mentioned Agassi) to hopefully make a Djokovic.
Medicine is anti evolutionary as we let even the worst genes to be introduced into the next generation, in the name of pay per click health. The last time we had a fair competitive field was in my childhood era, and I am 49yrs old. Sixty now.
Sports science at an acceptable level to most is to screen those who irrespective of where their hearts might be, can or cannot do certain sports.
It doesn’t help if Usain wants to become Armstrong. His anaerobic fast twitch muscle fibers will work against him and he would have to give more than aerobic and mitochondrial flushed Armstrong to reach the same competitive level in cycling.
To most parents though, this would be unacceptable still. It’s not in the price you bring back home; it is the taking part that matters, I can hear my ex wife will chirp in.
Hell no I insist, don’t do nothing that you can’t do right is my philosophy across life. The kid who sued the parents for letting her appear in idols (parents said her voice was song bird perfect) had every right to. I am still with her all the way.
To complicate matters worse, Usain Bolt will be found to have been cheating in a few years time. Research will catch up.
Kenyans have an unfair advantage when it comes to long distance running, nature will have to shoulder this one. They have a natural EPO because of their geographic altitude that selected for centuries more efficient muscle and hemoglobin characteristics. What we watch in sport today is cheats that science has not caught up with yet.
This will probably make many people raise their hands in frustration asking why not open the doors to everybody to cheat and let the best doctor win?
That can only make sense if you are Don King. The rest of us have to take care of this very client’s health today and his post competitive sport consequences.
My suggestion is to screen all at a pre pregnancy level. Some genes, to make a stupid example, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, peroneal muscular atrophy (CMT), and achondroplasia to name a few, would be extinct if left to doctors to manage.
Try convincing a mother with a happy and carefree Downs’ special baby of that and you in line for a Nobel peace price.
A purpose to life at last and you want to snatch it from my grasp.
Life is not as easy as science wants us to believe.
A purpose to life at last and you want to snatch it from my grasp.
Life is not as easy as science wants us to believe.
If biochemistry and physiology of beauty and health are the elements of every mix, then results are assured
